How do I customize the look of the PDF files I export?

This article describes features that are part of the beta version of Clarify.

PDF Templates Preference Pane

PDF Templates Preference Pane

The PDF Templates preference pane allows you to create your own PDF templates. Just click the + button (1) to create a template. Once you have created the template you can change the margins, colors, fonts, page size, etc. You can even specify the text that should appear in the footer and a logo to use in the header.

To see what your template will look like click the Preview button (2).

I'm sorely missing an option of specifying the page orientation for the resulting PDF. For example, I'm using wide screenshots, and I would really like to put them into an A4 PDF with landscape orientation, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that. Is this planned at some point?

Trevor DeVore

@Marko - We do plan on adding landscape orientation at some point. I don't have a timeframe for when that will be.

Marko

Are there any paper format files that I could manually edit to achieve the same result? Obviously there are a number of supported formats, so they have to be specified somewhere, and I'm guessing they are not hard-coded in the code. Simply specifying the height and width of the page should hopefully achieve the same effect without needing any changes to the UI.

Trevor DeVore

@Marko - Changing the paper size is quite simple to do (it is just a setting in the PDF generator we use). The steps won't necessarily be optimized for the wide layout, however.

If you would like to fiddle with the PDF templates then send an email to [email protected] and I can let you know the details. It is just HTML so it is easy to modify.

Evan

I strongly second the need for landscape orientation. I use Clarify to put instructions and directions onto maps, and often landscape is better. Otherwise, great program.

cay

Also strongly advise landscape option - how many 'portrait' orientation screens do you see...?

Jeff

Landscape mode, please! Love the product!

is there an option to sync/export PDF templates that I've created? I use Clarify on several computers and it's not easy to always easy to use the one computer that I have the PDF template on.

Trevor DeVore

@aaron - There is no sync or export feature for PDF templates but you can manually copy one from one computer to another.

On OS X you will find custom templates in the ~/Library/Application Support/Clarify/1.0/Templates/PDF folder. Each folder in the PDF folder is a custom template.

On Windows the Templates folder is located in the same folder as the Clarify preference file. This article specifies the location of the preference file based on your version of Windows: http://bmls.screenstepslive.com/s/clarify/m/clarify/l/49495-where-is-the-clarify-preference-file-located

If you copy a PDF template folder from one computer to another then the template will be available in Clarify.

I would like to export to Tabloid size, a popular North American size. But most sizes are metric. Can you include this size too?

Trevor DeVore

@Sylvain - yes, we can add tabloid in.

Mandaris

Is there a place where I can get clarify templates?

Trevor DeVore

@Mandaris - no, there is not.

Fran Glazer

I'd like to be able to include my logo on the top left, with the name of the document next to it in the header.

Also: I'd like to be able to choose colors by hex values to match my institution's brand colors - is that possible?

Trevor DeVore

@Fran: In the current version you can't place the document name next to the logo. As for colors, Clarify uses the system color picker. You will probably have to convert the hex values to RGB.

Bill Bates

This is a great app, but needs a little more control over PDFs.

I would like to be able to set a manual page break. A live print view would also be helpful.

cpultz

I second @Fran Glazer - our organization would like the document title AND a .png of the logo in the header.

Andrew

Is there a control for page breaks? In the delivered templates, my PDF output contains "natural" page breaks. However, in my custom template there is a page break after each step -- which is creating a rather lengthy document. Is there a way to get the page break of the custom template to appear in the same way as the delivered template?

Trevor DeVore

@Andrew Clarify 1 does not provide a means for you to change how page breaks are handled. The included templates and custom templates follow the same rules for page breaks (Clarify tries to keep steps together). You may see different results based on the page margins/size, however.

In the next major upgrade to Clarify we will provide a means of adjusting the page break rules.

Andrew

@Trevor - Thanks for the fast reply. Is there a way to see the page margins/size of the delivered templates so that I can apply them to my custom template?

I am trying to get my custom template output to match what is created when I use the delivered template.

Trevor DeVore

The "Clarify Black & White" template uses 0.5in 0.5in 0.6in 0.5in (starting from top and moving clockwise).

The "Clarify Blue" template uses 75pt 30pt 50pt 30pt. Both are on size A4 paper.

You find these values in the HTML file that makes up the template. These files are stored inside of the ./components/templates/pdf/ folder of your Clarify install.

George

I am actually looking for a way to have each step go on a seperate page...is there a way to easily do that?

Trevor DeVore

@George - Clarify 1 does not provide a way to put each step on a separate page. We will be providing a way to do that in the next major upgrade to Clarify (version 2).

Michael

Is there a way to to add a logo to the footer, instead of just the header?

Trevor DeVore

@Michael - there is not.

Mitja P

Hi,

First, its a really nice product - desperately needed for SMEs with lots of technical documentations to handle.

I miss some options for modifying the pdfs, for example: changing the size of the fonts or adding a logo to the pdf. The more options the better, especially for design oriented products.

Thanks,
Mitja

Trevor DeVore

@Mitja - You can add a logo in the Header Settings. Clarify 2 will allow you to change the font size for various parts of the PDF.
